Co-investigator, Joe Watson, MD

Basic science research involved inducing focal ischemia in rats by occluding the middle cerebral artery. Blood flow was then re-established and the rats were terminated at various time intervals. The brain tissue was evacuated and stained with Factor VIII Related antigen, which is specific to endothelium and is up regulated when the endothelium is damaged. The tissue was then counter stained with cresyl violet, which indicates neuronal damage. The two areas were then compared.
